It was created through an initiative by Udumo Designs.</div><div><br></div><div>Ronesia du Plessis (18), finished matric last year and dreams of becoming a teacher. For this she needs a bursary. She is extremely excited about the opportunity to work for Udumo Designs, the Durbanville-based non-profit company behind Tyger Valley’s Village Christmas theme this year and says she never thought she would be able to do something like this. She looks around her and says: “Wow, I created that”.</div><br><div>Jeronay Adonis (18) stems from a single parent family and does waitering work on weekends to help her family. It is her goal to become a social worker.</div><div><br></div><div>Claudine Kassiem (31) is married without children. She used to be a cashier but also has a dream to become a teacher. She has a strong desire to achieve something in her life.</div><div><br></div><div>When asking these girls what they want for Christmas, they all agree that to have peace in their hearts and homes and be surrounded by their family members, would be the greatest gift of all.</div><br><div><span style="color:inherit;">So, let us unite as communities of Cape Town in keeping the dreams alive that will continue to make our society inclusive and inspiring for all.</span></div></div></div>

Our heart is to provide a platform for keen and talented people to better themselves and their communities, helping them to grow and walk in liberty. Our various projects are therefore designed to not only create but to leave a legacy through lasting impact.”</div><br><div>As is the case with all their projects, the focus once again fell strongly on job creation and community involvement to produce the festive décor elements, which in previous years have won the coveted Spectrum Award at the Footprint Awards. Amanda van Zyl is the production leader and provided training to the women, stemming from Smartie Town in Paarl, who handmade the decorations. Double-glazed windows are beneficial because so much heat is lost through glass. Add window coverings in the form of curtains or blinds to support the insulation and you have eye-catching, arty techniques to control a building’s temperature in an energy efficient way.</li><li>Carpets are excellent thermal insulators and help considerably to retain a room’s heat. Not only that, but they also add to the appeal of a room’s décor, adding a sense of warmth and comfort while saving on heating energy.</li><li>The value of colour in reducing the need for extra lighting is a subtle factor that is sometimes ignored. Long-lasting and available in a variety of styles and colour, your flooring is the base to the rest of your design, and should be chosen to assure the least damage to the environment.</li><li>An important eco aspect when planning your design is to follow the ‘origin route’ – in other words, keep a check on how materials are sourced. There are many labels and certifications that enable the environmentally sensitive designer to identify the origin of eco-friendly products, ensuring that the extraction, harvesting, production, transportation, and processing can be evaluated throughout all processes. Bamboo, for instance, is fast becoming an ecologically popular choice through both proven sustainable production and a variety of decorative uses.<br><br></li></ul><h2><img src="/imported-files/texture-300x198.jpg"><br></h2><h2><strong><br><span style="font-size:18px;font-family:Montserrat, sans-serif;font-weight:500;color:rgb(183, 163, 121);">Designing with natural textiles</span></strong></h2><span style="font-size:18px;"></span> With natural textiles you are going achieve a more comfortable and sustainable environment simply by avoiding synthetics, which are usually the product of the petroleum-based industry. Aim to produce the ultimate in comfort in an eco-friendly way across a range of materials for pillows, upholstery, rugs, bedspreads and cushions, etc – natural choices that are less susceptible to fire, kinder to the touch, and in natural harmony with both humans and animals. <br><br><h2><strong style="font-family:Montserrat, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:18px;font-weight:500;color:rgb(183, 163, 121);">Designing for waste reduction</span></strong></h2><span style="font-size:18px;color:rgb(183, 163, 121);"></span> Reuse and recycle are the watchwords in the new green movement currently sweeping through the design industry. This is probably one of the classic ways to be eco-friendly. While an eye for repurposing products is good, there are manufacturers who create remarkable furniture, furnishings, building materials and décor items solely reliant on a recycled process. Even waste material can be recycled for new use, especially with regard to synthetic materials which, if discarded, are thrown into landfills, potentially damaging the environment for years to come. It’s more environmentally expedient to keep such materials in the loop of continuous revision and use. <br><br><h2><strong><span style="font-size:18px;font-family:Montserrat, sans-serif;"><span style="font-weight:500;color:rgb(183, 163, 121);">Designing for longevity</span></span></strong></h2><ul><li>While considering the best eco-friendly materials, designers also have to consider the lifespan of that material. Resilience is key to sustainability because the idea is not to continually replace aspects such as flooring or furnishings every few years. Classic natural elements must be balanced with durability, quality and functionality.</li><li>Décor should be flexible enough to be changed without renovating an entire house. That’s without going to the extreme of minimalism or measuring every cushion; a cleared space can give a different view of your furniture and furnishings, and actually clear your head. <br><br>But never mind opening up your mind, just think of the effects of cluttered space on the décor of your home. To be blunt, a cluttered home often means you have no décor. Well, it might be there under all the mess – but if nobody can see it, then seriously why did you bother? <br><br><h2>The psychology of clutter<br><br></h2> The thing with clutter is that it is as negative psychologically as it is aesthetically. The great benefit to clearing out is that you have to make decisions. Sometimes this entails staring at great-granny’s china budgie for ages while you decide on its sentimental value and how it would ever enhance your modern space. So clearing out takes time, effort and thought. When you clear out, you are essentially working to keep only what you will need. Everything else should go – leaving you with a freedom of spirit and a fresh, airy look to your home. <br><br>While clutter might hide your décor, it reveals quite a bit about your character – perhaps some aspects you would prefer people not to know. When a visitor walks into your cluttered home be assured they will have a good sense of:&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>Procrastination </strong>– they will guess that you might be slow in getting things done, a fence-sitter, unlikely to keep yourself busy, somewhat unreliable, perhaps even lazy.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>Poor decision-making</strong> – living in a mess may mean you are scatterbrained, forgetful, insecure, and unable to move forward, always in <em>I’ll get this done tomorrow</em> mode.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>Lack of energy</strong> – being unaware of the mess around you may be an indication of lack of motivation, or even a more serious underlying health problem such as a heart issue.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>Stress and depression</strong> – if you are overwhelmed by emotional issues, the likelihood of you paying attention to your surroundings diminishes. You forget how pretty your cushions look because they’re buried under a pile of newspapers or untidy throws. Letting clutter hide your home can be a form of depression, and you should pay a visit to your doctor.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>Isolation and loneliness</strong> – sometimes clutter in the home means you are really trying to hide away. Revealing the true décor of the house would be like opening up to the truth about yourself or your situation. Lonely, insecure people often take refuge in a messy home that for them feels comfortable, familiar, reassured – it’s their <em>stuff</em> – but in reality this attitude can perpetuate a rut and discourage visitors.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>Career productivity</strong> – even your work can suffer even though you may be miles from your home. Unfortunately, people often take a cluttered mindset with them wherever they go, and when your company seeks a decisive, adaptable person with leadership qualities, they may not pick you – especially if you’ve had your boss to supper…&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>Concern for your safety</strong> – a house with too many objects is hard to clean and as a result there may be an inordinate amount of dust lurking about, which is so often the catalyst for allergies. It’s also important to note that clutter can be a fire hazard because the more paper, magazines and general paraphernalia are lying about, the quicker flames can travel through your home. <br><br><h2>The benefits of decluttering to décor<br><br></h2><strong>Light:</strong> The first thing you might notice once you have cleared your home, is that there appears to be more light. Windows may have opened up with less furniture stacked around them, and less furniture and clutter in the room allows more light to penetrate – possibly in corners where it’s never been before! Light provides a greater sense of space and lifts the mood. It highlights and complements the new order you have created, and lifts your décor into focus, adding colour and greater harmony to the layout of your room.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>Repurpose:</strong> There’s no need to throw everything away. Indeed, you might find objects you had forgotten and be able to put them to good use. An old gramophone player might find new pride of place in your living-room, intriguing visitors. Or an old bookcase can be repainted and add a new corner of interest in any room. An old lampstand with a new shade can be very effective.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>Replace:</strong> Decluttering gives you a view of what is holding back the look of your home, and lets you sift through ideas of change and updating. Is your coffee table too small or broken? Are your kitchen cupboards looking grubby? Is your doormat in tatters? Do you need a couch recovered? Very often it’s the simple things that won’t cost a fortune that can revolutionise the look of your home. Decluttering produces clarity and vision, and lets you quickly see where an improvement can be usefully effected.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>See the real value of your home:</strong> If you’re wanting to sell, the first thing you might be advised to do, is clear the clutter. There are vital selling points in every home which, if hidden by too much mess and furniture, fade from effect through poor lighting and visibility. Decluttering allows you to make those valuable décor points such as fireplaces, shelving, the spaciousness of a room, access points and good design more evident and pleasing.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div><strong>Clearing the chief culprits of clutter:</strong> The decluttering process itself need not be too traumatic – unless of course, the situation is dire. We are continually influenced by the way an exterior experience makes us feel – and that includes the way we perceive simple things around us such as furniture, lighting, colour. <br><br>To focus on that interaction between our thoughts and our surroundings takes some concentration – a clear, deliberate moment when we stop our hurried thoughts, our busy brains, and say: <em>Look! Look and feel the moment. See the bed, the blanket, the untidy row of shoes. See it!</em> And confront it in the moment – and analyse how you feel. And how you can put it right, make it better. That is mindfulness coming into action in décor. <br><em><br>The meaning of mindfulness<br></em><i><br></i>Mindfulness means experiencing with full awareness and heart our feelings in a moment-by-moment view, our bodily sensations, our surroundings. Mindfulness means looking at things in a way that is unjudgmental and critical. Mindfulness quietens the soul, and focuses on the present fully so that issues of the past, or fear of the fear, slip away and leave us with a clear, calm vision of what we are experiencing in a current moment. It gives us the ability to make more rational decisions. <br><br>Naturally it requires practice. It isn’t the easiest thing to do. Our minds are often dominated by worry of what ‘has’ to be done and what ‘might’ happen. Busyness can be both detrimental and beneficial; but bringing your conscious mind into focus in moments of anxiety can be extremely relaxing. In a moment, you can stop, look, and feel. Mindfulness and the environment means bringing a host of elements into balance, streamlining shapes, colours and combinations. When there is space in a home for a mind to relax, then mindfulness becomes easier. <br><em><br>Ways to streamline, relax and really see and feel your surroundings <br></em><strong><br>One: Your house as a whole. </strong> Firstly, look at your home as one entity, flowing from room to room, and creating its character from the way space has been used, and the way one item of furniture works with another, or how a set of cushions or a picture carry a sense of continuity through the house. Nothing garish that suddenly clashes with the mood of each room. <br><strong><br>Two: Colours. </strong> Probably one of the most important exterior aspects to affect the senses and bring the mind into focus is colour. For a sensation of relaxation, you need to avoid bright, vibrating colours like red and yellow. Instead, choose tranquil shades like pale calico, dove greys, blue and green, stone colours, and shades reminiscent of the sea. Even gentle pastels like lavender and pink could work, mixed in with white. Matte is better than high gloss. Furnishings should follow a quieter flow of colour, including artwork and pictures. When there is a blend of colour rather than a clash, even if that might seem trendy and effective, the mind will feel less pressure and greater clarity.<br><br><b>Three: Texture. </b> Bringing in different materials, juxtaposed for light and shade is enormously stimulating for the mind, giving an extra dimension in sharpness and comprehension, which is important to mindfulness. Use beading, wallpaper, wood, alternate rough furnishings with smooth. The desire to touch is important and adds another aspect to the atmosphere of mindfulness you’re trying to create. <br><strong><br>Four: Declutter.</strong> Nothing benefits mindfulness than less stuff. Get rid of anything that has no purpose and is really just in the way. Too much busyness in your surroundings can cause subtle agitation – which certainly unproductive in the mindfulness book. Minimalist is of course the perfect way to go, but you don’t really need to live in a naked house – you can balance and match furniture and objects by colour and style, have enough to please the eye and comfort the soul. It’s not always the amount of stuff, but the way you arrange it. Low furniture for instance, always gives a sense of more space. <br><strong><br>Five: Windows.</strong> Let there be light – the more the better. If you have small windows use blinds instead of curtains. This opens up the window area and lets in more light. Wider windows can be framed by curtains, but keep to paler shades to complement the light coming through. Light is important to enhancing mindfulness, it makes you more aware of objects and surroundings. It channels your attention to hues and shapes. Natural light is always a good feeling. <br><strong><br>Six: Natural materials.</strong> The warmth of wood, the security of stone, the shine of silk, the rough comfort of pure wool – all these materials will add a sense of permanence and reality to every moment.
